ASVAB Study Guide

Mechanical Comprehension (MC)

Mechanical and physical principles. Learn a practical way to study this area and try an original ASVAB-style example.

What to focus on

Practice gears, pulleys, levers, force, pressure, motion and simple machines.

Worked example

Example: If a 10-tooth gear drives a 20-tooth gear, the larger gear rotates more slowly.

Coach tip

Draw the direction of motion and identify the mechanical relationship before answering.

How to practice

  • Start untimed and prioritize accuracy.
  • Review every miss and label the reason: concept, reading, formula, setup or rushing.
  • Repeat the underlying skill with a different problem.
  • Add time pressure only after the method feels reliable.

Subtest purpose is summarized from the official ASVAB Enlistment Testing Program. Practice examples on this site are original and are not official test questions.
